Five charged with bomb possession

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga., April 28 (UPI) -- Five people were arrested after police in Gwinnett County, Ga., allegedly found homemade bombs in a car during a routine traffic stop, authorities said.

The officer called in a bomb squad and firefighters who determined the devices were made with "intent to cause great bodily harm or even death," Gwinnett police spokesman Brian Kelly said.

Four people were arrested at the scene Monday and a fifth person was arrested at a Buford, Ga., home where other materials that could be used to make bombs were allegedly discovered, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday.

William Parten, 41; Phillip Duncan, 54; Shirley Maddox, 62; Michael Brewer, 42; and Matthew Rothove, 44, were being held Tuesday without bond in the county jail on a charge possession of an explosives device.

"The true intent and motive for the manufacturing and possession of the destructive devices is still unknown at this time," Kelly said.
