Man, 79, robbed on subway; no one reports

TORONTO, April 27 (UPI) -- A 79-year-old Canadian subway rider allegedly was mugged by two men in their 20s, as fellow riders looked on and did not place calls for help, officials said.

The two men allegedly took the elderly man's wallet on the train in Toronto Saturday after the victim tried to activate the passenger assistance alarm, but couldn't reach it. The victim chased the two when they got off the train, but was unable to apprehend them, the National Post reported.

Constable Wendy Drummond said police would never want citizens to intervene in a robbery, but would expect witnesses to help by calling 911, alerting a train official or by some other means.

"It is disappointing that nobody would come to his assistance," Drummond said. "To date, we haven't had any witnesses come forward. We know there were other people there."

Drummond said the two suspects' images likely were caught by security cameras.

Persons with information are asked to contact police at 416-808-5400.
