8-year-old steers speeding truck to safety

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., April 26 (UPI) -- An 8-year-old Colorado boy grabbed the wheel of a speeding truck and steered it to the side of the road after his grandmother had a seizure, paramedics say.

Lisa DeKruger was driving about 75 m.p.h eastbound on Interstate 70 with her grandson Dillon Earl in the passenger seat when she apparently suffered a seizure just before 11 a.m. Sunday morning, the Grand Junction (Colo.) Sentinel reported.

"She's had seizures before, but never while driving," said Justin Earl, Dillon's father.

Grand Junction Battalion Chief Duncan Brown said Dillon grabbed onto the steering wheel, navigating the truck over to the right lane while the truck slowed down due to DeKruger's foot slipping off of the accelerator, the newspaper reported.

Another driver called 911 and helped move the truck to an exit ramp.

DeKruger is doing well, Justin Earl said.

"The end result came out very, very well," Brown said. "It could have been very tragic."
