Rosy Blue Diamonds of Antwerp sued in federal court and won a $6 million judgment against Chad Davis of Orlando, Fla. The company has asked a bankruptcy judge to hold Davis to the debt instead of discharging it, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Davis reported to security at the mall on Nov. 1, 2006, that he had left a small case holding diamonds and cash under a table. The empty case turned up in a restroom.
Davis waited six days to report the loss to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Rosy Blue's lawyers say the company sold Davis $6 million worth of diamonds six months before Davis' alleged mishap.
The diamonds have not been found and have not appeared on the market anywhere, the newspaper said.
Davis says the diamonds were not insured and he does not have the money to pay Rosy Blue. He suggests a housekeeper might have found the bag, removed the money and dumped the rest of the contents.
