COPENHAGEN, Denmark, April 22 (UPI) -- Kurt Westergaard, the Danish cartoonist who became famous or notorious for his depiction of the Prophet Mohammed, is thinking of hanging up his pencil.

Westergaard turns 75 in July. He has been living with 24-hour police protection since January when an intruder armed with an ax broke into his home in January, the Copenhagen Post reported.

In 2005, the newspaper Jyllands-Posten outraged Muslims by running 12 cartoons depicting Mohammad. Muslims believe neither God nor his prophet should be shown in portraits. All the drawings were considered blasphemous, but Westergaard's, which showed Muhammad with a bomb coming out of his turban, was perceived as the worst.

Westergaard has been on leave since November and is set to meet with the Jyllands-Posten editor in June.

"I'm soon 75 and I've enough to be doing with my own things," he told the Ritzau news agency. "I think we're getting closer to a final decision and it could be that I end up stopping completely, but I can't say for certain yet as I'm still on vacation."
