Son of former Giant Bonds to stand trial

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 21 (UPI) -- The son of former San Francisco Giant Barry Bonds is scheduled to stand trial on charges relating to an alleged domestic dispute with his mother, officials say.

A June 21 trial date has been set by a San Mateo County Superior Court judge for 20-year-old Nikolai Bonds, accused of spitting in his mother's face during a December confrontation at her Menlo Park, Calif., home and threatening a police officer, the Palo Alto Daily News reported Wednesday.

At a pre-trial conference Tuesday, prosecutors alleged an argument ensued between Bonds and his mother, Sun Bonds, around 10 a.m. Dec. 5 after Sun suggested his friends may have taken jewelry from her home.

Prosecutors contend Bonds allegedly spit in her face during the argument, broke property including two crystal bowls and physically prevented his mother from leaving through the front door, the Daily News said.

Bonds allegedly threatened a Menlo Park policeman and his family with harm after police arrived and arrested him.

Bonds faces charges of false imprisonment, vandalism, battery, obstructing an officer in the performance of duties and making threats to an officer.

If found guilty, he faces two years in county jail. Bonds remains free on $50,000 bail.
