Woman allegedly grabs baby from mom

HOMESTEAD, Fla., April 15 (UPI) -- A woman is charged in South Florida with snatching a month-old baby from her mother as she left a doctor's office, hurting the child's head.

Police in Homestead say Shalese Nichole Mostiller, 25, used a spray to subdue the mother Wednesday, the Miami Herald reported. She then allegedly grabbed the baby and ran off with her.

A passerby was able to stop Mostiller and retrieve the infant, Police Detective Fernando Morales said.

"If he would not have intervened, that woman would have been gone with that baby," Morales said.

The baby was taken to Miami Children's Hospital and was reported in serious condition with a head injury.

The mother, whose identity has not been released, was targeted as she left a medical office in Homestead. She was accompanied by another child.

Mostiller faces several charges including armed burglary and aggravated child abuse, Morales said.
