WASHINGTON, April 15 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama paid $1.8 million in taxes on $5.5 million in adjusted gross income, their 2009 tax returns show.

The Obamas' return, released by the White House Thursday, totaled 65 pages and showed the bulk of the Obamas' fortune came from the sale of the president's books.

The Obamas reported they gave $329,100 to 40 charities, with CARE and the United Negro College Fund each receiving $50,000. The president also donated his $1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize award to 10 charities. Under IRS rules, that amount was not reported as income or taken as a charitable deduction, the White House said.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, reported on their tax returns they had adjusted gross income of $333,182 and paid federal taxes of $71,147. They paid $12,420 in Delaware income taxes and $1,477 in Virginia income taxes, while contributing $4,820 to charity.
