No '10 vote to void Calif. gay wedding ban

SACRAMENTO, April 12 (UPI) -- A homosexual rights organization said Monday it had failed to place a measure repealing California's ban on same-sex marriage on the November ballot.

The group Restore Equality 2010 had sought to collect 700,000 petition signatures to give voters the opportunity to void Proposition 8, the bitterly fought measure that passed in 2008 and limited marriage to heterosexual couples.

"Our signature collection effort may have fallen short, but we stand tall as being the only statewide campaign that fought for repealing Proposition 8 in 2010," Sean Bohac, chairman of the group's advisory panel, said in a written statement.

The Sacramento Bee said the Restore Equality 2010 was an offshoot of the larger anti-Prop 8 group Restore Equality, which earlier had set a target date of 2012 for its attempt to repeal the marriage ban. The strategy behind the longer time line would be to build up a foundation of public support and vote during the presidential election when more young people would presumably show up at the polls.

Bohac said his group would work for passage of a Prop 8 repeal in 2012.
