Serbia issues warrant for WW II suspect

BELGRADE, Serbia, April 2 (UPI) -- A Serbian court issued an international arrest warrant Friday for an 88-year-old former citizen suspected of war crimes during World War II.

The court named Peter Egner, an ethnic German born in Yugoslavia, as suspected of being a member of the German Gestapo police and being instrumental in the deaths of 17,000 civilians, Jews, gypsies and political dissidents from 1941 until 1943, Radio B92 reported from Belgrade.

The warrant alleges Egner directly ordered the sending of tens of thousands to the Staro Sajmiste concentration camp outside Belgrade in the Nazi-occupied country, Voice of Russia reported.

Egner is believed to be living in the United States, the reports said.

No details were released as to what led to the warrant being issued to the international Interpol police agency.
