EAST LANSING, Mich., March 27 (UPI) -- A former police officer who spent 12 years in prison for three robberies is a suspect in a string of robberies in and around East Lansing, Mich., police say.
The Detroit Free Press said Saturday that Ronald Nelson, who was once a police officer in Livonia, Mich., was arraigned Friday after being tabbed as a suspect in the robberies of five East Lansing area banks since November.
Nelson, who was released from prison in 2009, was arrested Thursday after tellers at an East Lansing bank allegedly recognized him from photos of authorities' lead suspect in the robberies.
Authorities from multiple departments helped St. John's police Lt. Michael Carey stop Nelson's vehicle after the officer followed the suspect for more than 20 miles.
"It was quite the scene," East Lansing police Capt. Tom Johnstone said of Thursday's arrest. "The officers initiated a felony stop with multiple vehicles, and he surrendered without incident."
Johnstone told the Free Press that Nelson could face additional charges in connection with other area bank robberies.
