Man arrested after six-hour standoff

HOUSTON, March 25 (UPI) -- Police in Houston said they arrested an 84-year-old man after the armed suspect allegedly held officers at bay Thursday for nearly six hours.

The standoff began when Gerald Lancaster allegedly fired a gun while arguing with his wife at their home in the southwestern part of the city, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Authorities said Lancaster's wife fled the home after the shot.

Authorities unsuccessfully attempted to convince Lancaster to leave his home. Tear also was ineffective, so SWAT team members ultimately breached the home and arrested Lancaster.

No one was hurt in connection with the early morning incident.

Lancaster, who is facing charges of aggravated assault, allegedly told authorities he slept through most of the lengthy standoff with police, the newspaper said.
