CHICAGO, March 22 (UPI) -- Twitter users are being warned of a scam that asks for personal information in private messages sent through the social networking service.

Twitter members who "follow" each other can correspond privately through a feature called "Direct Messages."

The scam that began circulating during the weekend sends a direct message asking "You're on here?" and a link to a Web site, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

"If you get such a message on Twitter, do not click the link or enter your login details on the landing page. If you find you're sending out these (direct messages) to friends, change your Twitter password," advised Mashable, a blog that reports on social media.

Increasingly, because of their enormous popularity, social networking sites are the targets of scams and malicious software.
