PRINCETON, N.J., March 22 (UPI) -- Americans' support for the use of nuclear power has climbed to a new high of 62 percent, a Gallup Poll results released Monday indicated.
A majority of Americans have favored using nuclear power to provide electricity in the United States since 1994, when Gallup said it first started asking about the topic.
Support edged up during the past two years, passing 60 percent this year for the first time, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said. The 28 percent of Americans who now say they "strongly favor" nuclear power also is the highest measured since 1994.
Polling results for 2010 came after President Barack Obama announced federal government loan guarantees to build the first nuclear power plants in the United States in three decades.
Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews of 1,014 adults conducted March 4-7. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
