HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., March 19 (UPI) -- California police say they have received more than 400 telephone calls since they released pictures of women taken by convicted killer Rodney James Alcala.
Ten detectives from the Huntington Beach Police Department have been assigned to follow up on leads generated by the calls, the Los Angeles Times reports.
"Between the time we left late last night and the time we came in this morning we had 45 messages on the hotline," Capt. Chuck Thomas said Thursday.
Alcala was sentenced to death in February for killing 12-year-old Robin Samsoe in 1979. In this trial, his third for the Samsoe killing, he was also convicted of killing four women in the Los Angeles area.
Investigators say Alcala may have killed other women. Last week they released more than 100 photos of women found when he was arrested for the Samsoe killing in 1979.
Thomas said detectives following the tips are now trying to determine if six photos could be of other Alcala victims.
Alcala, a photographer with a degree from UCLA, appeared on "The Dating Game" in 1978 and worked briefly as a typesetter at the Times in 1977.
