WASHINGTON, March 19 (UPI) -- Completion of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's $305 million computer overhaul is being delayed until early next year, U.S. congressional officials say.
The effort to develop a modernized FBI information system was scheduled to be finished this fall but design changes and "minor" technical problems have delayed the final phases of the work, The New York Times reported Friday.
FBI officials say they view the issue more as minor kinks than serious problems.
The forced suspension of work on the vital national security project is expected to result in at least $30 million in cost overruns, The Times reported.
Sen. Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, has called the delay "terribly frustrating."
More important than the financial cost is the FBI's ability to handle its job with an information system that is regarded as sub-par in several crucial areas, officials say.
