Wal-Mart announcement angers customers

TURNERSVILLE, N.J., March 17 (UPI) -- Officials in New Jersey said they're looking into an incident at a Wal-Mart in which a racially offensive remark was broadcast in the store.

The familiar phrase "Attention, Wal-Mart shoppers" was followed by "all black people must leave the store now" at the Turnersville store Sunday, The Gloucester County Times reported Tuesday.

Sheila Ellington said she and a friend heard the remark as they were checking out.

"Once I heard that, it was almost like a hush over the whole store momentarily because no one had believed what had taken place," Ellington told the newspaper.

A store manager said the security tape for Sunday was being reviewed to try to determine who hijacked the public address system.

Bernie Weisenfeld, a spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office, said an investigation was under way.

"It's being treated as a suspected bias crime in which the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office is assisting Washington Township," Weisenfeld said.
