Results of an early 2010 poll indicate Newsom is a strong candidate for the lieutenant governor position.

KPIX said among the 600 likely Democratic voters in poll, 33 percent said they would vote for the San Francisco mayor in the state's lieutenant governor race.

The poll also found 17 percent of respondents support Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn in the state electoral race, while15 percent for California State Sen. Dean Florez.

Additional details regarding the poll, such as its margin of error and polling dates, were not released.

KPIX said if Newsom wins the state seat, he would initially be replaced as San Francisco mayor in January 2011 by Board of Supervisors President David Chiu. An interim mayor would then be appointed by city officials.
