CHICAGO, March 12 (UPI) -- The father and son who ran Boston Blackie's restaurants are charged in a multimillion-dollar check-kiting scheme, the Cook County, Ill. state's attorney said.
Anita Alvarez said Nick Giannis, 62, and his son, Chris, 38, are in custody and charged with ripping off nearly $1.9 million from two banks, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.
Nick Giannis was arrested in Detroit by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers after he attempted to enter Canada, Alvarez said.
Prosecutors said Giannis, his son and restaurant manager Andy Bakopoulos, 38, participated in a so-called check-kiting scheme.
They allegedly wrote checks from accounts at Broadway Bank that didn't have enough money and deposited the checks at Charter One and Washington Mutual. They then withdrew money from the Charter One and Washington Mutual accounts before the checks actually cleared, or in some cases stopped payment on the checks.
Alvarez did not identify a motive for the alleged scheme.
