Three tanker cars derail in Connecticut

WINDHAM, Conn., March 11 (UPI) -- Three tanker cars, including a car carrying liquid ethanol, derailed in Connecticut, officials say.

Railroad spokeswoman Marie Angelini said Thursday the partial derailment of the 80-car train took place overnight as the train was traveling from North Dakota to Providence, R.I., The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported.

Angelini said despite the partial derailment in Windham, Conn., 71 of the Providence & Worcester train's cars were able to continue their journey. No injuries were reported.

While one of the three derailed cars contained liquid ethanol, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection confirmed none of the cars ruptured.

State DEP spokesman Dennis Schain said each of the cars can carry as much as 30,000 gallons.

The Courant said Providence & Worcester expects the three derailed cars to be righted before the end of the day.
