Thief's dad returns church's chalices

NEW YORK, March 11 (UPI) -- A New York man said he returned to a church two chalices valued at $14,000 and $150 of poor box money, stolen by his 20-year-old son.

Thomas Kurplewski said his son, Theodore, confessed several days ago to the Feb. 26 burglary of St. Helen's Church in Queens, the New York Daily News reported.

Thomas Kurplewski brought the items to the church Tuesday, the newspaper said.

"Remorse was immediately felt," the father said of his son. "He's a good Christian man."

Theodore Kurplewski was arrested and was awaiting arraignment Wednesday.

"Whoever did it, in my heart, is completely forgiven. But justice, in whatever way, also has to be done," said the church's vicar, Rev. Robert Keighron, who added that one of the chalices, worth an estimated $13,000, was an ordination gift from his parents and held great sentimental value.
