WASHINGTON, March 11 (UPI) -- A couple dozen House Democrats are expected to reject a U.S. healthcare reform bill when it reaches the floor, a survey by The Hill indicates.
At least 25 Democrats said they were either firm or likely "no" votes on the legislation, The Hill's survey of lawmakers, aides and lobbyists released Thursday indicated.
Dozens of other Democrats were either undecided or wouldn't comment on their position concerning the healthcare vote, the Washington publication said.
The Hill said its survey didn't include Congressional Hispanic Caucus members, who are threatening to vote no unless changes are made to the bill's immigration-related provisions.
The survey didn't include in the "no" category Democrats who insist Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak's language on abortion limitations be part of healthcare reform. Stupak has said there are 12 Democrats who support his language that was in the House bill but not in the Senate version up for consideration.
With Republicans expected to all vote against the bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California must minimize defections, the Hill said. Thirty-nine Democrats voted against the House healthcare bill that passed 220-215 last November.
Since the November vote, one Democrat switched parties and four seats are vacant, The Hill said. Assuming everyone votes, Democratic leaders can't afford more than 37 members breaking ranks, which would lead to a 216-215 tally.
