DETROIT, March 8 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick may have violated a court order by not disclosing the source of money orders paid toward his restitution, officials say.
A court filing by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy's office alleges Kilpatrick violated Judge David Groner's court order by not disclosing the sources of 89 money orders paid on Kilpatrick's behalf, WXYZ-TV, Detroit, reported Monday. The filing deals with restitution payments toward the $79,011.00 Kilpatrick was ordered to pay the city of Detroit by a Feb. 19 deadline.
The 89 money orders total $40,223. Among the names appearing on the checks are the ex-mayor's uncle Raymond Cheeks, his grandfather, his sister Ayanna Ferguson, brother-in-law Daniel Ferguson III and Karen Cheeks, the Detroit Free Press said.
Assistant county prosecutors Robert Spada and Athina Siringas allege "Kilpatrick has not disclosed this as a gift or benefit and has failed to disclose the source for the payments."
Failing to disclose the source of the payments violates previous court orders, prosecutors wrote.
Michael Alan Schwartz, Kilpatrick's attorney, says he's waiting for Groner to issue an order this week in the case. Groner could reissue a bench warrant for Kilpatrick, WXYZ-TV said.
