Flash flooding kills six in Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 5 (UPI) -- Flooding in Kenya caused by heavy rains killed at least six people, including three children, and damaged hundreds of buildings, the Kenyan Red Cross said.

Floodwaters swept away livestock and submerged at least 120 homes in the country's Upper Eastern Region, Kenya Broadcasting reported Friday.

Among those who drowned were the children and two people riding a bicycle that was carried away by the flood.

Britain's Royal Air Force and army aided in the rescue of dozens of tourists stranded in Kenya's Samburu National Park by the flooding, the BBC reported

Tour guide Steve Lekango said at least 17 tourists were rescued by helicopter after the deluge destroyed bridges.

"Most of the guests were forced to climb trees while they waited," Lekango said.

The flooding damaged several luxury lodges and an elephant research center at the park, Radio Netherlands reported.
