Media embraces Topeka's Google switch

TOPEKA, Kan., March 3 (UPI) -- The mayor of Topeka, Kan., says he has given multiple interviews to the media in the wake of his decision to rename his city Google, Kan., for a month.

Topeka Mayor Bill Bunten officially signed a proclamation this week allowing his city to be known as "Google, Kansas -- the capital city of fiber optics" for the rest of the month, The Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal said. In the wake of Google move, Bunten gave interviews with major media organizations such as CNN and to journalists from as far away as England and Canada.

The Google switch in Topeka is intended to lure Google to the Kansas city. The Internet search technologies corporation is reportedly looking for a location to serve as a test site for a new ultrafast Internet connection.

The Capital-Journal said other cities seeking to host the testing are Grand Rapids, Mich., and Baton Rouge, La.

"We're excited to see the enthusiasm for fast and better broadband," an unidentified Google spokeswoman was quoted as saying by the National Post.
