Riddle misses deadline to hire attorney

DETROIT, March 1 (UPI) -- Detroit bribery trial defendant Sam Riddle missed a deadline to hire new counsel Monday and a court will likely appoint a lawyer next week, authorities said.

Attorneys John Minock and Edward Wishnow withdrew after U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn declared a mistrial in February because of a deadlocked jury, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Prosecutors in the trial alleged Riddle, 63, and his former boss, ex-Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers, extorted money from people who wanted to do business with the Detroit City Council.

Conyers pleaded guilty to bribery and is scheduled to be sentenced next week.

Cohn had set Monday as a deadline for Riddle to tell the court if he had hired a new lawyer, the newspaper said. With no word from Riddle, the judge set a hearing for next Monday and is expected to name a court-appointed attorney.
