Missionary: Haiti jail not so bad

ATLANTA, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- One of the U.S. missionaries arrested in Haiti as they allegedly tried to take children out of the country said Friday the group had "good intentions."

In an interview with CNN to be aired Friday, Jim Allen said Haitian police treated him and the rest of the group as well as they could expect given conditions in the country. While they had to sleep on the floor, Allen said, they were given a hot meal every day.

The roof leaked when it rained, he said, but millions of Haitians "were getting poured on."

Allen was part of a group of 10 missionaries organized by an Idaho woman, Laura Silsby, who traveled to Haiti after the 7.0-magnitude earthquake Jan. 12. They were arrested when they allegedly tried to take a group of 33 children across the border into the Dominican Republic without the required authorization.

A judge released most of the group Wednesday, but Silsby and another woman remain in custody.

Allen said the group had "good intentions" and he had seen no evidence Silsby was somehow hoping to profit from her work with children.
