U.S. promises decision on Asian carp

YPSILANTI, Mich., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army will decide whether to close the Chicago locks in order to keep Asian carp from spreading into Lake Michigan, an official says.

Jo-Ellen Darcy, assistant secretary of the Army, says a decision on whether to intermittently close the locks will be made within 90 days, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.

Darcy cautioned that even if the government does close the locks, they're not watertight.

Some 200 people concerned about the possible spread of Asian carp into Lake Michigan showed up for a hearing with federal officials in Ypsilanti Wednesday.

It was the third and final public meeting on the Asian carp problem.

U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., says closing the locks is the best thing the government can do to prevent the carp from spreading.

Michigan and four other states have filed a lawsuit seeking to close the locks temporarily until a permanent solution can be found.
