Man gets life sentence for killing sister

PONTIAC, Mich., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A judge in Oakland County, Mich., says a 20-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison for raping and killing his sister.

The Detroit Free Press said Thursday Oakland County Circuit Judge Edward Sosnick sentenced Steven Kelsey to life in prison, but not before the convicted killer spoke openly about the death of his sister, Jesika.

"I'm very sorry. There is not a day that goes by that I am not haunted," Kelsey said in court Wednesday.

Kelsey's mother, Jennifer Spencer, also spoke Wednesday about the stabbing death of her daughter on Jan. 1, 2009, in her family's mobile home in Highland Township, Mich.

"I used to have two wonderful children I loved very much," Spencer offered.

"All in one horrible act, Steven took away her future, and threw away his own," she added later.

The Free Press said Kelsey was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of his 17-year-old sister. Authorities said the killing took place as Steven Kelsey was home on break from Army basic training.
