Fire in town house kills four children

FLINT, Mich., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Four children, all under age 5, died in a fire in Flint, Mich., after their babysitter began cooking and then allegedly fell asleep, a fire chief said.

The children were being watched by a 28-year-old man, who escaped through a first-floor window after neighbors saw flames and banged on the door of the town house Saturday night, Flint Fire Battalion Chief Andy Graves said.

The children were from three families.

"It's pretty heartbreaking," Graves told The Flint (Mich.) Journal in a story published Monday.

The sitter had started cooking on the stove when he allegedly fell asleep, Graves said. City officials plan to investigate the circumstances of the fire and how it was handled, Dawn Jones, a city spokeswoman said.

"We want to make sure that everything was done to save the four lives of the children who died in the fire," she said.
