Barefoot bandit suspected in burglary

FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Authorities in San Juan County, Wash., say they suspect the so-called barefoot bandit is responsible for a burglary on Orcas Island.

The Seattle Times said Thursday the individual who broke into an Orcas Island grocery store overnight made off with $1,200 and some food items, but also caused more than $5,000 in damages and drew 39 cartoonish footprints in chalk on the store's floor.

Authorities said the same night as the burglary at the Homegrown Market & Gourmet Delicatessen, stole a Cirrus SR22 single-engine airplane in Anacortes, Wash., and flew the aircraft to Orcas Island.

The Times said 18-year-old Colton Harris-Moore, dubbed the barefoot bandit by members of media, is a suspect in the theft of several other aircraft.

In 2009, the teenager was a suspect in nearly 50 burglaries and thefts, becoming a cult hero featured on T-shirts and on a fan Web site.

San Juan County Sheriff William Cumming told the Times there is no physical evidence to date linking Harris-Moore to this week's crimes.
