ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Canadian Premier Danny Williams of Newfoundland and Labrador was released from an undisclosed U.S. hospital Thursday after cardiac surgery, his staff said.
The 60-year-old flew south from St. John's Feb. 1 for the surgery three days later, which local doctors told him wasn't available in the province, The (St. John's) Telegram reported.
No details of his condition or the procedure were released by Williams' office, and communications staff said the premier would speak about it if and when he chose.
The announcement said "doctors are very pleased with his progress," the newspaper said.
Last week, acting Premier Kathy Dunderdale said Williams should be back at work in early March, and staff said Thursday that hasn't changed.
His decision to seek surgery outside of Canada raised debate among Canadians about the quality of universal healthcare in the country and also among U.S. opponents of such programs.
