KINGMAN, Ariz., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- An Arizona prosecutor has agreed not to use any evidence seized in a raid on a Texas ranch at the upcoming trial of polygamist leader Warren Jeffs.
Jeffs, 57, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a dissident Mormon group, is charged in Arizona with being an accomplice to sexual conduct with a minor. The charges involve marrying two of his followers to underage girls.
After Mohave County Attorney Matt Smith said he would not present evidence from the Yearning for Zion Ranch, Superior Court Judge Stephen Conn canceled a hearing scheduled for next week, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday.
Defense attorney Michael Piccarreta argued evidence from the ranch, raided by Texas authorities in 2008, is tainted.
The FLDS is based in the twin towns of Colorado City, Ariz., and Hildale, Utah. Jeffs has already been sentenced to five years to life in Utah for forcing a teenage girl into marriage.
