Poll: GOP gaining on Dems, Obama

WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Republicans have closed the gap with Democrats on whom Americans trust to handle the country's problems, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll indicated.

The survey, released Wednesday, indicated more than seven in 10 Americans disapproved of the job Congress is doing.

Respondents were evenly split on the question of how they'd vote in the November House of Representatives elections; 46 percent saying they'd vote for Democrats and 46 percent with Republicans.

The overall approval rating for President Barack Obama held steady, with 51 percent of respondents giving him positive marks and 46 percent giving him a negative rating, the poll indicated.

On key domestic issues of the economy, healthcare, jobs and the federal deficit, bare majorities of respondents approve of the job he is doing, the Washington Post-ABC News poll showed.

The nationwide telephone poll surveyed 1,004 adults Thursday to Monday. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
