KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A senior Afghan police official, accused of helping insurgents, was arrested by NATO forces, but Afghan officials asked if it was a case of mistaken identity.

The police official, accused of helping the insurgents make and plant roadside bombs, was arrested last week during a raid in eastern Kapisa province, The Los Angeles Times reported, quoting Western military officials.

While provincial officials questioned if the incident resulted from mistaken identify, the Afghan Interior Ministry said NATO has been asked to explain the arrest, the Times report said.

NATO did not name the arrested official in its statement. The official was arrested along with a bodyguard, the report said.

The arrested official also was accused of corruption involving a road project, the report said.

Partnership between coalition forces and the Afghan security is a key part of the Afghan strategy of U.S. President Barack Obama's team, which includes the drawing down of U.S. forces starting next year as Afghan security forces begin to take responsibility for the security of their country, the report said.
