MIAMI, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Florida state officials said owners of exotic animals were allowed to turn in their pets no questions asked in Miami so the animals could be legally adopted.

The Miami Herald said Sunday that Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission officials collected non-native animals Saturday at the Miami MetroZoo in an attempt to prevent the pets from being released into the wild.

Animals collected as part of Non-native Pet Amnesty Day were eligible to be legally adopted by owners with the required permits for owning such exotic creatures.

Nearly 70 exotic animals were collected at Saturday's event, the third of its kind at the MetroZoo. Among the animals collected were eight Burmese pythons, 10 ball pythons and 16 red eared slider turtles.

FWC biologist Larry Connor said handing over their pets proved emotional for some owners.

"For some folks, it's traumatic," Connor told the Herald. "We've had people in tears."

All animals turned in Saturday underwent checkups from veterinarians before being placed up for adoption.
