Mudslides damage homes in California

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Torrential rain and a collapsed hillside with cascading mud and debris has damaged 41 homes in the La Canada-Flintridge area of Los Angeles, officials say.

At least six homes in the area have been soaked with mud, rocks and uprooted trees and more than five homes have been marked uninhabitable. About 25 vehicles have been damaged by the K-rails, the concrete barriers placed to protect the houses, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

About 65 houses in the area have been ordered evacuated and officials are considering further expanding the evacuation zone.

"We are trying to clear debris so that residents can get out safely," Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Frederic Stowers said.

The storm came into the area overnight and pounded Los Angeles County with heavy rains, causing at least two fatal car crashes.

The Times said two vehicles collided in the suburb of Santa Clarita due to hydroplaning, with the fatal accident resulting in one of the vehicles falling off an overpass.

In Industry, Calif., a hydroplaning pickup truck crashed while traveling on the Pomona Freeway, killing two.
