Dogs who mauled children face death

FONTANA, Calif., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Four dogs will be put to death in California after attacking a mother and her children, injuring a girl so seriously she was on a respirator, officials said.

The dogs will be put down Feb. 11 after the mandatory quarantine period to determine if they have rabies, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. A fifth dog was shot by a police officer.

Josie Arellano and her two sons and two daughters were attacked Monday in Fontana after the dogs burrowed under a fence.

Arellano and one of the boys were uninjured.

Destiny Colon, 5, suffered a punctured lung and broken ribs. A spokesman for Loma Linda University Children's Hospital said her condition was upgraded to serious Wednesday.

Hector Perez, 6, needed 235 stitches for wounds on his legs, Sgt. Jeff Decker of Fontana police said. His sister, Princess Colon, 7, needed 18.

Decker said police have not decided whether to charge the dogs' owner. But he said at a minimum the owner will receive summonses for violating Fontana's limit of three dogs per household and for allowing them to escape.
