Don't stow the shovel; Phil sees shadow

GOBBLERS KNOB, Pa., Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Pennsylvania's groundhog prognosticator, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow Tuesday, forecasting another six weeks of winter beyond a shadow of a doubt.

"Punxsutawney Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter," groundhog.org, the official Web site for the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club proclaimed, adding in smaller type details would be provided later.

The annual winter rite at Gobblers Knob in western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh is based on a tradition that if skies are sunny and bright on Feb. 2 -- the Christian feast day of Candlemas -- winter will hang on for another six weeks, the Philadelphia Inquirer said. If it's overcast -- spring would be six weeks away, ironically the same amount of time.

Using a groundhog is based on a German tradition of predicting the length of winter by whether a hibernating animal sees its shadow.
