VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Radar problems were to blame for the failure of a U.S. missile defense test, military officials say.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency said it conducted a Sunday flight test of the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense System. It reported that after a successful launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., a missile defense interceptor missed its target because "sea-based X-band radar did not perform as expected."

CNN reported the X-band radar installation is perched atop a modified floating oil platform and is designed to provide information about incoming missiles so interceptors can be launched.
