WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., got wealthy benefactors to kick in at least $1 million to hide his pregnant mistress from the world, a former aide says.

Andrew Young says Edwards concocted an elaborate scheme to keep the mistress and her pregnancy a secret while he competed for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, ABC News reported Friday.

"I know of at least a million dollars. And there was much, much more," Young told ABC in an interview about his new book, "The Politician," scheduled for release Saturday.

Young falsely claimed he was the father of his boss's love child after the story broke in the National Enquirer.

In the book, Young provides an account of his family's life on the run with Edwards' pregnant mistress, actress-filmmaker Rielle Hunter.

Young says he helped smuggle Hunter through a series of luxury hideaways with funds provided by wealthy benefactors.

Edwards recently admitted he is the father of Hunter's daughter.
