DENVER, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A pastor of a church in Brighton, Colo., said he kept a white supremacist group from picking up litter along a stretch of highway near his church.

Elmwood Baptist Church pastor Gary Randall said he contacted the Colorado Department of Transportation after hearing about plans to allow members of the National Socialist Movement to clean up a nearby portion of U.S. Route 85, The Denver Post reported Thursday.

"I just didn't want them by our church because it is multiracial and our members are uncomfortable with anything like that," Randall said of his decision.

Randall said his church is also tasked with cleaning up the nearby roadside under a prior agreement with state transportation officials.

The Post said the department confirmed in a release Wednesday that members of the National Socialist Movement will instead be allowed to take part in roadside clean-up efforts on a different stretch of the highway.

"CDOT takes full responsibility for this error and apologizes for any confusion it may cause or has caused for these Adopt-a-Highway volunteers," the state agency said.
