Woman fakes cancer, collects from friends

BALTIMORE, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A Baltimore woman who allegedly pretended she was dying of cancer has been released from the county detention center after posting bail, officials say.

Dina Perouty Leone, 37, was indicted on theft and conspiracy charges for collecting thousands of dollars from friends to finance chemotherapy and a "final" trip to Disneyland, The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday.

Leone connected with her classmates from Dundalk High School on Facebook, telling them she had been diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer.

"There was no physical evidence of her being treated for cancer, and no medical evidence," said Adam Lippe, assistant state's attorney.

Leone's friends said they began to be suspicious of her story when she suddenly turned up bald rather than losing her hair over time.

The report said one of Leone's major donors was Jennifer Lasek, the wife of nationally-ranked skateboarder Bucky Lasek.
