NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Several homeowners in Newport News, Va., said they face making mortgage payments on homes contaminated with potentially dangerous Chinese drywall.
Psyche Page and other area homeowners maintain while they are concerned about the foreign-made drywall, government officials have done little to address their concerns, the Newport News Daily Press reported Wednesday.
Page said homeowners are left paying off mortgages on homes they no longer can live in without fearing for their health.
"We just need a 'timeout' on our mortgages, until they can figure all this out," Page said. "But nobody wants to step up to the plate and do anything."
"The wheels of government are turning very slowly," agreed another local homeowner, Eric Bailey.
People living in homes made with the Chinese drywall have linked the building materials to damaged electrical systems, corroded metals and various illnesses, including respiratory problems.
Similar defective drywall problems have been found in parts of more than 30 states, including Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Virginia.
The Daily Press said in addition to Newport News, drywall concerns have been reported in James City and York counties, Williamsburg and South Hampton Roads, all in Virginia.
