Poll: 30 percent would give Obama 2nd term

NEW YORK, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- One year into his first term, just 30 percent of Americans are ready to give President Obama a second term in office, a poll released Tuesday indicates.

The Angus Reid Public Opinion poll found 39 percent of those surveyed think Obama does not deserve to be re-elected in 2012 and 32 percent are not sure.

The polling firm questioned 1,003 American adults last Thursday and Friday. Its results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points

Among Democrats, 57 percent would give the Democratic president another four years in office but only 21 percent of those identifying themselves as independents would. Seventy-four percent of Republicans are sure they don't want Obama to have another term.

Overall, about 11 percent said they thought Obama has performed better than expected, 47 percent about as expected, 36 percent worse than expected and 7 percent were not sure.

The poll indicates Obama's image as a change agent has suffered, with 49 percent believing he has worked across party lines to get things done -- a dip of 3 percentage points since November -- 55 percent seeing him making progress in bringing about change -- a drop of 8 points -- and 55 percent viewing him as embodying a new brand of politics -- down 10 percent.
