R.I. gourmet food producer recalls salami

PASCOAG, R.I., Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A Rhode Island gourmet foods producer said it is voluntarily recalling items containing its salami products due to several possibly related illnesses.

Eleven people became ill who consumed salami products contained in "Daniele Italian Brand Gourmet Pack," by Daniele Inc., but state and federal officials have not yet established a connection between the illnesses and any Daniele product, a release by the food company said Saturday.

The state department of health and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Saturday found that the Rhode Island food plant was meeting all food safety regulations, the release said.

"Our family business has been producing premium gourmet products for over 60 years. While we conduct further tests, our goal right now is to take prudent, proactive measures to do everything possible to remove any products that do not meet our high standards for quality and taste," vice president of sales, Davide Dukcevich, said.

The company said anyone who has purchased the products may return them for a full refund.
