NORMAN, Okla., Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A group of Oklahomans protesting a meeting of the Council on American-Islamic Relations alleges the group has ties to terrorists.
About 12 people calling themselves Oklahomans Against CAIR Hate gathered Saturday in Norman, Okla., to picket outside a building where CAIR was screening a documentary film about Islam, The (Oklahoma City) Oklahoman reported.
Members of the group alleged that CAIR is linked to terrorist activities.
"I'm not against Muslims and I'm not racist," protest leader Cindy Crenshaw told the newspaper. "I'm protesting CAIR. They have proven ties to terrorists and court cases where leaders are in jail," while Kevin Calvey, a conservative Congressional candidate, asserted the founder of CAIR's Dallas chapter was sentenced to 65 years in prison for his terrorist connections.
"People who are protesting are totally doing this as a self-serving effort," Oklahoma CAIR chairman Michael Aziz Gipson told the Oklahoman. "It is a throwback from the '50s and '60s and is dividing instead of uniting."
