ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- An Illinois man was sentenced to almost 17 years in federal prison Friday for orchestrating a national identity theft operation.

A judge in Alexandria, Va., imposed a 200-month term on Leonardo Darnell Zanders, 49, of Dolton, Ill., the Justice Department said in a statement. Zanders pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to commit bank fraud while prosecutors were presenting their case at his trial.

Investigators said Zanders and Clyde Austin Gray Jr. of Waldorf, Md., employed others to steal personal and financial information. The information was used to make false identification, including driver's licenses and military identification cards, which were then used to get money out of bank accounts.

The group allegedly stole $1.5 million from banks.
