Toyota recalls 2.3 million vehicles

DETROIT, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it is recalling 2.3 million vehicles to fix gas pedals that can stick, causing vehicles to accelerate.

The recall comes about two months after a separate recall of 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles because gas pedals could become stuck under a loose floor mat. About 1.7 million vehicles are subject to both recalls.

Toyota said it had looked into reports of sticking accelerators in vehicles without floor mats.

"Certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position," Irv Miller, Toyota USA group vice president, said in a statement. "Consistent with our commitment to the safety of our cars and our customers, we have initiated this voluntary recall action."

Toyota says the gas pedal can stick when it becomes worn. It may become harder to depress, slower to return or stuck in a partially depressed position.

"Toyota is working quickly to prepare a correction remedy," the automaker said.

If the pedal in a vehicle sticks or returns slowly, the driver should brake firmly and steadily without pumping.

The recall covers these vehicles: 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 Camry, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2008-2010 Sequoia.
