Diet giants to battle effectiveness claim

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Weight Watchers has won a court order temporarily banning a commercial in which a celebrity claims a clinical trial shows Jenny Craig, Inc.'s plan is better.

The Jenny Craig television advertisement features TV actress Valerie Bertinelli wearing a lab coat and shown among "scientists" as she claims "a major clinical trial found that Jenny Craig clients lost, on average, over twice as much weight as those on the largest weight-loss program," the New York Post reported Thursday.

Weight Watchers won a temporary restraining order, claiming it was obvious that the reference to the largest such program clearly indicated Weight Watchers. Weight Watchers said the claim is false, the newspaper reported.

The next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 1 in Manhattan federal court.
